There was a really nice bronze monument for "Wild Bill". |
We were surprised that the inscription on the monument said, "Custer was lonely without him." We had never heard of them being associated with each other. |
"Calamity Jane" was right next to him. It was hard to get a photo of the stone because of the fence around Wild Bill's plot. |
At the base of the monument, people left all kinds of things for Wild Bill. Money, cigarettes, matches, cards, flowers and bullet casings were just some of the things we noticed. |
The cemetery was really neat. We didn't see any headstone more recent than around 1912. |
The view from the cemetery. It was in the Black Hills. |
Now leaving Deadwood. |
We stopped for a little break at the Pactola Dam & Reservoir. |
Pactola was a pan-for-gold type settlement. When they built the dam, the settlement was flooded. It's a pretty lake now. |
We finally made it to Mount Rushmore around lunch time. |
We drove for a while and didn't see anything except for the Black Hills. Finally, we turned a corner and saw a profile. |
