We got there at the perfect time of the day, close to sunset. |
There were several hiking trails winding through the park. |
We saw deer, prairie dogs and a vulture in the park. |
These were called the Yellow Mounds. |
The park was much bigger than we thought. It went on for miles and we only skirted the edge! |
It was Kris' Grandmother's birthday. The cell phone coverage was so sketchy, we tried to call her whenever we had a even a little coverage. |
That night we stayed in Deadwood, SD at the historic Franklin Hotel. It opened in 1903 and still has one of only five working 1911 Otis elevators. A hotel employee has to hand-operate the elevator. It was very cool seeing each floor go by! The elevator man was just what you'd expect. He was an older man that was totally hard of hearing. He asked what floor, Bill said, "Four." and he said, "Eh?" |
We stayed in Room 401, the Jack Dempsey Suite. Dempsey stayed at the Franklin in 1942 while he was in the Coast Guard. He was selling war bonds for WWII. They said he very much liked the basement bar. |
There are tons of famous people who stayed at the Franklin. John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, Tom Brokaw and Kevin Costner, just to name a few. This was our parlor room. |
More of the parlor. |

One of the two bedrooms. |
