The courtyard was for celebrating the sed festival. After thirty years the pharaoh was expected to prove himself by chasing a sacred bull around the courtyard and catching it by the tail.

They think Djoser, who the step pyramid was built for, chased the bull every three years instead of thirty.

They were excavating other areas around the pyramid.
